During the schism of the Russian Church, this icon painter could not understand for himself the meaning of Nikon’s reform and fell into madness. Then he began to fervently pray to the Most Holy Theotokos for admonition. After Her vision, he received a promise of healing if he painted an icon of the Mother of God in the form in which She appeared to him.
